Imagine having a flatter stomach, no saggy loose skin in your mid-section and a narrower waist. Imagine looking at yourself in the mirror and loving what you see. Imagine being able to wear the clothes you want to wear and know that you look good in them. That’s what an abdominoplasty can do for you.

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) reports that there were 758,590 tummy tucks performed in 2015, a 11.1% increase over 2014. Technically known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck tightens up loose skin, removes fat bulges, and repairs abdominal muscle wall separation (diastasis recti). The procedure has an excellent satisfaction rate for patients. In fact, a 2012 study conducted by Dr. E Swanson that was published in the medical journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, reports that people who had abdominoplasty scored their results an astounding 9 out of 10! In addition, 86% said that they experienced a boost in their self-esteem.

A tummy tuck can give you the body you never had. It can also give you back the body you’ve lost from dramatic weight fluctuations and/or having kids.

Before & After

10 Reasons Why Your Tummy Tuck is Better at Estetikcentrum

Our surgeons have been performing tummy tucks for so many years. Men and women from not just Sweden, but around the world, come to us. Our popularity is based on a sincere dedication to patient safety and satisfaction. Here are 10 reasons why we are a leading plastic surgery clinic:

1. A Surgical Facility That’s So Safe And Comfortable That Even Our Own Surgeons And Medical Staff Would Have Their Surgery Performed Here.

We’ve made our surgical facility as safe and comfortable as possible, to the point that we ourselves (along with our families and friends) would be eager to have surgery here. All staff, advanced equipment and implemented techniques have all been selected to achieve this. A good example that demonstrates our commitment is the air filtration systems we have in our surgical room. In addition to the standard air filtering system that all surgical rooms should have by law, we’ve gone one step further and added another filtering system for further purification: the France-made DOPair filtration system. DOPair eliminates even the tiniest of particles for a more thorough decontamination of the surgical room.

2. Pre-Surgery Antibiotics To Dramatically Reduce The Risk Of Infection.

Infection is the second highest risk related to abdominoplasty (the first is hematoma, or blood collection). Although the occurrence of infection is extremely low, we are still committed to minimizing this risk. One way we do this is by administering antibiotics to you before surgery. This has dramatically reduced the rate of infection after surgery for our patients. In fact, we have been so successful at doing this that in the last year, not one of our patients has experienced a major infection that required corrective surgery!

3. Your Tummy Tuck Is Drainless.

Have you ever seen after photos of tubes sticking out of a patient shortly after their tummy tuck? These drains are inserted into cavities within the treated area so that fluids can be drained from the body, reducing the risk of seroma (fluid collection) and hematoma (blood collection). Patients that have drains need to empty them routinely throughout the day, and are often asked to measure the amount fluid that collects. And because there are open holes in your body where the drains are inserted, the risk of infection is quite high. Patients need to keep these tubes in for a few days, until they return to their surgeon to have them removed. There’s no doubt that drains are a nuisance, hygiene risk and uncomfortable.

Did you know that with advanced surgical techniques, there is no need for drains to be used? In traditional tummy tucks that require drains, too much tissue is removed, leaving muscle and the overlying skin to rub together. This friction is what causes fluids to build up, making drains necessary. However, our surgeons at Estetikcentrum don’t cut deep down into the muscle when performing a tummy tuck. They leave a small layer of fat on the muscle, leaving the Scarpa fascia intact (the Scarpa fascia is subcutaneous tissue that covers the abdominal wall of the lower abdomen). This reduces the friction between the skin and muscle, preventing seroma and fluid collection. As a result, drains are unnecessary for our tummy tucks — which is such a relief for our patients because they don’t have to deal with the discomfort of having tubes running out of their body or the mess of excreted fluids. There is also a lower risk of infection with a drainless abdominoplasty.

4. We Apply 3 Layers Of Suturing For Better Support And Less Scarring.

With all the twisting and bending over that we do on a daily basis, the abdomen area needs to be quite strong. That’s why any incisions that are made during a tummy tuck need to be closed completely so they can heal properly. Abdominal muscle separation can also be corrected if necessary, using specialized suturing techniques to give your stomach a flatter appearance.

For stronger support of your treated tissues, our surgeons apply three layers of suturing. The first is with absorbable polydioxanone sutures (PDS) placed at the Scarpa fascia. This layer is the foundation that supports and holds up the visible scar. PDS slowly dissolve over several months, during which time the body creates enough scar tissue to close the incision firmly and properly. The second is with polyglactin 910 (Vicryl) sutures, which close the ends and reduce tension on the visible scar. Finally, absorbable glycolide and epsilon-caprolactone sutures (monocryl) are applied to close the skin.

Tension on a scar will cause the scar to get bigger and more visible. We apply three layers of sutures to reduce the tension on the scar, leaving you with a scar that is harder to see. That’s why we don’t typically have complaints about scarring after surgery from our patients. However, we do offer silicone strips and tape if you’d like to further reduce the appearance of scarring.

And fortunately, you won’t need to go through the hassle of having any sutures removed since they’re absorbable.

5. We’ll Make Sure As Many Stretchmarks As Possible Are Removed.

Stretchmarks are a common concern for women who’ve had children or for anyone who has experienced dramatic weight loss. The only way to really get rid of stretchmarks in their entirety is to remove the skin that has them. For this reason, we’ll remove as much loose skin that’s affected by stretchmarks as possible. This can be done in the area below your belly button. Stretchmarks above your belly button may not be removed, but they may be reduced in appearance.

6. We Give You An Electric Warming Blanket And Warm IV Fluids So You Don’t Feel Cold After Surgery.

When patients are woken up from surgery, it’s not uncommon for them to be shivering. This can be downright unpleasant. To keep you warm and cozy during and after surgery, you’ll receive IV fluids that are warmed before administration, and an electric warming blanket, so you won’t be cold. Sure, they may be an additional cost that we have to cover, but we think that they’re important to make your surgical experience a better one!

7. You Can Choose To Have Liposuction To Improve Your Results.

Liposuction is an easier way to get rid of fat in places that are harder to reach , such as in the area above your belly button and on your sides. Having liposuction performed at the same time as your tummy tuck gives you a better result, flattening out and toning areas more effectively than an abdominoplasty alone. Liposuction of the love handles, in particular, is popular because it eliminates the bulkiness on your sides, giving you a smoother waist that may gently curve inward for more of an hourglass figure.

The fluids injected right before suction is performed also make the modification of tissue layers easier during a tummy tuck, giving you smoother and more consistent results. These fluids consist of anesthesia and adrenaline, both of which help your surgical experience and recovery. The anesthesia provides relief from discomfort for a longer time after your surgery. The adrenaline constricts blood vessels to reduce the rate of bleeding, so you’ll experience less bruising after surgery for a shorter and less intensive recovery period. That’s why if you’re having lipoabdominoplasty, liposuction is always performed first during surgery, right before the tummy tuck.

8.You’ll Get Complimentary And Comfortable Compression Garments To Wear After Surgery.

Therapeutic massage may also be performed during longer surgery (when a breast lift or other procedure is performed at the same time) to further prevent thrombosis.

The other garment is one that should be worn around your mid-section. Several styles can be quite uncomfortable and restrictive. We’ve examined several different types of garments to find the most comfortable and flexible one. The garment we provide you with adapts better to your mid-section, self-adjusting to your movement to make it much more comfortable to wear.

9. You’ll Be Observed By Your Own Nurse The Whole Time You’re In The Recovery Room.

When you leave the operating room, you’ll be taken to our recovery room where you’ll stay before being discharged. During these few hours, you won’t be ignored or forgotten. Our dedication to you continues! You’ll be observed by your very own recovery room nurse. Your nurse will sit right beside you as you rest, checking your vitals routinely and ready to assist you at any time in any way you need.

10. You’ll Get A Medical Note Allowing You A Full Two Weeks Off From Your Job.

A proper recovery is the only way you’ll have a successful surgical outcome. Undue stress, especially from work matters, can negatively impact your recovery progress. We don’t want you to be worrying about your job and delaying your recovery, which is why we’ll give you a medical note that you can give to your job allowing you to have a full two weeks off. That way, you can fully dedicate yourself to your recovery!

Your Tummy Tuck Consultation

How do you know if an abdominoplasty is right for you? How do you know if your surgeon will know what your expectations are? The only way you’ll find out is to speak with the exact surgeon who will be performing your surgery, and that’s exactly what will happen at Estetikcentrum! It’s the only way you’ll be able to get the reliable, medically-sound advice that you need to make an informed decision for your surgery and truly know if a tummy tuck is suitable for you.

If you have a BMI that’s 30 or over, you will need to lose weight for this surgery to be safer and more effective. Complication rates are substantially higher for those with a higher BMI and more mid-section fat. In addition, the risk of irregular contours (lumpiness) also increases.

Tummy Tucks for Weight Loss Patients

In Sweden, the second most popular surgery performed is gastric bypass. Gastric bypass for patients with a BMI of 32 or over is covered by state medical insurance. While the procedure can help a patient lose weight, it does not resolve the issue of loose skin and stubborn fat that are left behind. Even if you’ve lost weight by more natural means , you may still be left with a flabby mid-section and separated abdominal muscles. That’s why tummy tucks have become so popular these days. For women, breast lifts are also popular following Gastric bypass surgery.

Abdominoplasty for Mothers and Mommy Makeovers

Women who’ve had children are able to experience the joy of motherhood. But you may have also found that following pregnancy, your appearance has changed. Your stomach bulges and the skin on it is loose and saggy. You have stretchmarks and fat that you just can’t get rid of no matter how much exercise and dieting you do.

You won’t be able to get the body you had before pregnancy back, because your physiology has changed too much.  An abdominoplasty is the only way you can eliminate excess fat, tighten loose skin and correct abdominal muscle separation predictably and safely. As a matter of fact, the majority of our tummy tuck patients are mothers who want to look as good as they did before childbirth, or even better! Abdominoplasty, as well a breast lift to correct sagging breasts, are popular procedures that women get as part of their mommy makeover.

Which Tummy Tuck is Right for Me?

There are two types of tummy tucks that we perform: a full tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck. Both can do one or more of these things:

  • Eliminate excess fat
  • Tighten up loose skin
  • Repair separated abdominal muscles

The difference between the two relies on the area treated. A full abdominoplasty targets tissues above and below the belly button, while a mini tummy tuck only targets the area below the belly button. The majority of patients get a full tummy tuck because it is more common for the whole mid-section to be affected.

One more type of procedure that targets the mid-section is known as belt lipectomy. Also known as a circumferential body lift or beltplasty, this procedure does the same thing as a full tummy tuck, but removes excess fat and loose skin around the back as well.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Work?

An abdominoplasty is performed at our private surgical facility.  After the area to be targeted is marked, pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection are given. Anesthesia is administered. Liposuction is performed first if necessary. Then, your experienced plastic surgeon will make two incisions: one around your belly button and another horizontally, just above the pubic area hipbone to hipbone. Through these incisions, your abdominal muscles are sewn together if necessary and fat is removed. The overlying skin is then stretched downwards and draped in its new position to make it taut. If you have a lot of excess skin, it is possible to move the navel upwards, leaving you with only a small discreet scar.

Abdominoplasty Recovery

Your very own recovery room nurse will be waiting for you once your surgery is finished. Your nurse will observe you for the 2-3 hours you’re in the recovery room to make sure you’re ready to be discharged. You’ll talk to your surgeon before you go home and schedule a follow-up appointment in about 2 weeks so that we can monitor how you’re doing. We’ll give you pain medications, post-operation instructions, your compression garments and a few other goodies to take home with you.

Once you get back home, you’ll need plenty of rest. The first day after surgery, we’ll call you to make sure you’re doing well. You’ll need to remain slightly bent over at the waist for a few days after surgery. This reduces tension on your incisions, so they heal faster. Your complimentary compression garments should be worn day and night for about 3 weeks, and you’ll need to avoid rigorous exercise for about a month. You can get back to sedentary work after about 2 weeks. Most swelling should be gone in about 6 months, by which time you should be able to see your results.

Your Results

Are you looking forward to showing your body off at the beach? You should be! After your recovery, you’ll love looking at the mirror because you’ll finally be able to see the flatter stomach, smoother skin and fewer stretchmarks that you once only dreamed of. You’ll also enjoy a more contoured waist without love handles, so you won’t have any undesirable bulges hanging over your pants and skirts.

In addition to the aesthetic benefits, we’ve found a couple positive functional benefits as well: the reduction of back pain and improvement of bowel function! Back pain usually gets better or disappears completely after an abdominoplasty and bowel function is better.

What are the risks of abdominoplasty? Are tummy tuck dangerous?

Tummy tucks are safe procedures. Like with any surgery, however, there are risks associated with abdominoplasty. Infection is one of the most notable risks, caused when the wound heals poorly. This problem mainly affects smokers and may result in more prominent scarring. Therefore, it is important to be smoke-free at least a few weeks before and after surgery.

There may also be fluid accumulation in the lower abdomen if you move unreasonably or if your compression garment does not fit properly. This however, can be fixed without surgery. All that is required is to draw out the excess fluid with a thin needle.

You should also be aware that numbness in the operated area can occur for about a year after surgery. Sensory nerves of the skin are cut during surgery, which is why numbness occurs. These nerves will regenerate and sensation will be restored over time.

The greatest aesthetic complication is the risk of prominent scars. Your scars will, for the first few months, appear pink and red. As they mature, they’ll turn into fine silvery lines. If the scar does not fade properly over time, we can correct it with a simple in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia.

Another complication that can occur after surgery is bleeding under the skin, also known as a hematoma. This can also be corrected without major surgery.

Who is a candidate for tummy tuck?

An abdominoplasty is for men and women who have undesirable bulging in the mid-section, caused by loose skin, stubborn fat, and/or abdominal muscle separation, technically known as diastasis recti. Diastasis recti is when the connective tissue binding the left and right parts of your abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis) stretches out, leaving a gap between them. It is most common in women who’ve had children, and causes a bulging that may make you look like you’re still pregnant. Most patients are women who’ve had children and are seeking to reclaim their pre-baby body with a mommy makeover, or are people who have experienced dramatic weight loss, particularly following gastric bypass and other bariatric surgery.

Where are tummy tuck scars?

A typical tummy tuck will leave you with a scar around your belly button and across the area right above the pubic region, from hipbone to hipbone. If there is a substantial amount of lax skin to remove, another vertical scar may exist from the belly button downward to the horizontal scar. This is necessary to allow for tightening of skin laxity on the sides, which is common in dramatic weight loss patients. Our patients find their scars gradually fade into a thin faint line as their recovery progresses. This is because we apply suturing techniques that minimize tension on the incision line, giving you less obvious scars. We can also provide you with silicone strips to help further minimize scars.
