What are milia?
Simply put, milia are small, white or yellowish keratin cysts that sit just below the surface of the skin. They form when dead skin cells become trapped and are unable to rise to the surface. Unlike pimples, milia do not contain sebum or bacteria and are neither inflamed nor contagious. However, they do not go away on their own in the same way, and trying to squeeze them yourself often leads to irritation or scarring.
Why do you get milia?
Milia can occur for several reasons. In some people it is genetic and means that the skin produces more keratin than in others. It can also occur in:
