Protruding ears are considered unattractive to most people. If you think you can hide your ears under your hair, you are highly mistaking. There is a wide range of different ear defects (deformities) which are not exclusive to large or protruding ears. This is the kind of problem that usually makes children more susceptible to be mocked by their friends, which can have negative effects on their self-esteem and social interaction. Fortunately, this can simply be treated through a simple surgery. Children are major candidates for ear surgery or otoplasy, however, at Estetikcentrum, all adults are welcomed as well. Is parental consent necessary for children otoplasty?
Cosmetic ear surgery at Estetikcentrum
Am I a suitable candidate for this surgery?
Otoplasty on children is more risky and sensitive than it is on other patients, therefore, it requires the patient’s and his/her parent’s consent and most importantly the doctor’s approval. The child patient must meet the following conditions:
- Must be in perfect health
- Must not have ear infection
- Be at least 5 years old, and his/her ear cartilage must be grown enough
- Must be cooperative with the treatment team
- Must be able to communicate his/her needs and requests
Who needs an ear surgery?
As long as your organs are working properly as intended, you do not need any surgery or modification. The ear is one of the organs that performs its job properly in any form or size whatsoever, unless it has internal defects.
Ear surgery is a very personal and intimate surgery so the decision to go through with it rests solely on you. It’s you who has to decide whether or not they’re discontent with their ears to go through surgery. Nobody should force you to do it.
The following features are treatable through ear surgery:
- Dissatisfaction with the ear’s overall form
- Ear protrusion
- Macrotia (abnormally large ears) or overly large auricle
- Asymmetry in ears
- Ear deformities due to physical injuries or birth defects
- Not fully developed ear
- Cleft of ears and especially earlobes
- Absence of the auricle
- Earlobe laceration caused when earrings are pulled
- Question-mark ears characterized by a cleft between the
- auricle and the helix.
- And other defects
Benefits of an ear surgery:
- Through cosmetic ear surgery, you can treat many of your ear’s flaws.
- It is an absolutely safe procedure and at no risk to the patient’s life.
- After the surgery, the patient will be more satisfied with his/her appearance and will enjoy a much higher self-esteem.
- The incisions made during the procedure are not deep and will not be noticeable after the surgery.
We will have a consultation session for the children and their parents before the surgery. The surgeon will examine the ear form. Then the patient’s compatibility with the surgery will be determined based on their needs and personal conditions.
Common ear deformities include largeness of the ear canal opening and absence of the fold at the outer part of the ear. Excessively large ears (macrotia) is also one of the common deformities treatable by ear surgery. We are always seeking to find the best solution for you.
During this session, all of your questions will be answered and risks, benefits, costs, and the post-surgery care involved with the procedure will be discussed as well.
Preparing for an ear surgery:
Depending on the ear forms, the procedure typically takes 1-2 hours, and various techniques will be used in this surgery to improve the shape of the ear. So, it is a fairly complicated procedure. General anesthesia will be administered before the surgery.
You must restrict your children from drinking or eating from midnight or the morning before surgery. The previous night’s meal must also be light. This is because general anesthesia can induce a sense of vomiting in the patient.
Having a full stomach before the surgery increases the possibility of vomiting after waking up. It may also increase choking risk by rising of the stomach contents into the respiratory canal.
The following steps are necessary before the surgery:
- Take the prescribed tests
- Take the prescribed medicine, or stop your current medicine according to your doctor’s orders
- Stop smoking ( adults)
- Stop using Aspirin, Anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements
- Wear button up shirts or dress shirts so you don’t have to take it off from your head
How is an ear surgery performed?
During an ear surgery, the ears are bent back so they’re closer to the head. The bending of the ears is done by making an incision on the back of the ears. Then, the surgeon will fold the cartilage back (or into the proper position), and in order to achieve the best outcome, they will also make an incision on the center of the cartilage.
At the end, you will have ears which are harmonious with the other parts of your face and also closer to your head. The incision sites will be virtually invisible after the surgery and the scarring will be faded away after some time.
Ear surgery will take approximately 1-2 hours and the patient will be given local anesthesia or general anesthesia during the procedure, depending on the difficulty and complexity of the operation.
Since the surgeon will be working exactly right beside your ears, you will probably be very annoyed with the unpleasant sounds you will hear, therefore, using anesthesia for this operation is always recommended.
After cosmetic ear surgery:
Depending on how complex the ear surgery was, the patient can go home on the same day. Children might need to stay a day to rest.
After the surgery, you will have bandages wrapped around your head for about a week in order to help the ears get fixed in the new position. It is very important to avoid bending (or folding) your ears forward. After that, you will need to wear a headband at nights while sleeping, for 3-4 weeks.
Avoid any physical activity for the first few weeks of recovery. Children need to rest more than the adults. Children can go back to school usually after one week of recovery.
You might feel pain in the first days of recovery, which can be managed by taking painkillers.
You need to return to the clinic in about one week for further examinations. The surgeon or the doctor will check the results and also make sure that the patient is progressing through the recovery process. The final results will be examined 4-6 months later during another appointment.
When will the results of my ear surgery become noticeable and for how long will it last?
Cosmetic ear surgery will alter the patient’s face completely. The results are immediately noticeable and they will last for quite a long time.

Frequently asked questions:
What is the best age for cosmetic ear surgery?
Otoplasty can be done at any age after the ears have reached their full size, usually after age 5 or 6. Children have more flexible ear cartilages compared to adults, therefore, if otoplasty is performed on younger patients, the surgeon will have a much easier job changing the patient’s ear form, and at the end, the patient can benefit considerably from the physiological advantages of this surgery.
I am 40 years old and I’m dissatisfied with how my ears look, can I have a cosmetic ear surgery?
This surgery is performed on all patients so there is no real age restriction. The human ear is an organ that can change its shape and become enlarged due to aging, gravity, and the flexibility of ear cartilages. Therefore, most otoplasty patients are those whose ears became large and their earlobes became saggy due to their aging.
Can otoplasty affect my hearing?
Otoplasty does not affect the patient’s hearing at all. Auditory mechanism takes place through the inner and outer ear.
My ear has been injured in wrestling. Can otoplasty help me with this?
Facial trauma in sports is one of the main causes of “Hematoma”, which is the collection of blood under the ear’s skin. There will be no serious problem if the hematoma is drained immediately by the doctor, but if not, the hematoma gradually develops and becomes a very firm tissue called “Fibrosis”.
Fibrosis is what makes wrestlers’ ears turn into a cauliflower shape. It is very difficult to repair cauliflower ears through cosmetic earlobe surgery.
Will the sutures scar remain after otoplasty surgery?
Ear surgery is an extremely significant surgery that demands the surgeon be very careful during the procedure. A small scar will remain after the surgery, hidden behind each ear, which will not be noticeable at all. You can hide the scar with your hair.
