Forehead lift surgery is one of the most common procedures to combat deep wrinkles on the forehead. This surgery is performed both on men and women since people want to look youthful both on the inside and outside. This technique first lifts the forehead’s skin and then the eyebrows are elevated. In this way, even deep lines on the forehead caused by stress can be resolved. Lines and wrinkles between the forehead and brows caused by anger or stress make it looks as if the person is perpetually angry or tired. If you feel that a forehead lift is suitable for you, then we’d be happy to book a consultation for you with one of our leading plastic surgeons.

Benefits of a forehead lift include

  • Elevating the brows to look younger
  • Reduces wrinkles on the forehead
  • Elevating sagging eyelids
  • Getting rid of the frown line
  • Reduced forehead muscle tension

What is a suitable age for forehead lift to be performed?

Most patients visit us when they’re exhibiting many deep wrinkles on the forehead. Combining some facial surgeries could result in significant changes in the patient’s appearance. Most of our visitors for forehead lift are between the ages of 40 and 50 years old but there are also those who might need to undergo this procedure due to hereditary and genetics.

How can I know whether I need this surgery or not?

As you age, your facial muscles sag and your skin starts to wrinkle. The main signs that indicate you might benefit from a forehead lift include:

  • Having multiple horizontal wrinkles on the forehead
  • Having multiple vertical wrinkles on the forehead
  • Brow sagging and excess skin on the eyelid
  • The brow’s attractive curve diminishes and it starts to sag

A young forehead does not exhibit any of the above-mentioned signs. Additionally, there are no frown lines between the brows

Aesthetically speaking, the brow is located on the upper edge of the eye socket’s bone in men but in women the brows are higher and a little higher than the upper edge of the eye socket’s bone. Also the brow’s external part must be higher than its internal part. Eyebrows have a slight curve and the forehead is fully flat.

Preparation tips before the surgery

Make sure to follow these tips before the surgery:

Quit smoking

Smoking reduces blood flow in your skin. Additionally, the risk of tissue damage is higher in smokers. To achieve the best possible results, we recommend that you quit smoking for 2 weeks before the surgery and 4 weeks afterward. Smoking reduces the duration of surgery’s results. To have long-lasting results, we recommend you quit smoking altogether.

Stop using certain medication

Use of herbal medication, green tea, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is forbidden due to their blood-thinning effect and increased chance of bleeding during surgery. To avoid such complications, follow your surgeon’s advice on when to stop using such medication.

How is a forehead lift performed?

Forehead lift differs from a brow lift in that the whole forehead is lifted and not just the brows. Two different methods are used to perform a forehead lift. Now which method suits you best is determined by your surgeon during the first consultation session. In the following, we’ve gathered a list of pros and cons for each method.

The first method

In this method, the surgeon makes a long incision along the hairline and in some cases a bit above the hairline. Then, the surgeon opens the forehead skin from the incision to the brows. The surgeon might have to split certain parts of the forehead muscle.

The forehead skin is subsequently lifted towards the place of incision and tightened. Any excess skin is also removed. In some cases, excess skin is removed from the upper eyelid (eyelid surgery). Afterward, the surgical site will be bandaged for a few days. The nurse will inform you of how long you will need to be bandaged exactly.

This surgery is performed under general anesthesia or light general anesthesia using sedatives. But for those who can go under general anesthesia, it is possible to use local anesthesia and sedatives.

The second method

In the second method, several small incisions are made on the hairline so that the muscle and forehead skin lift can be done through keyhole surgery.

The technique used in laparoscopy results in even fewer scars that are not visible. The scars are unnoticeable because they’re located on the head’s skin and not along the hairline. This method is suitable for those who have thin hairline.

Aside from the place of incision and its length, this method is not drastically different from the previous one. This method is usually used on men who have less hair and suffer from receding hairline. In this method, smaller incisions are made very carefully.

However, in the first method, the surgeon has more control and a better view during the surgery because of the incision made across the hairline and its effect is more long-lasting than laparoscopy. This method can be used under light anesthesia or general anesthesia and in some cases, a sedative or local anesthesia can also be used.

Skin aging of the forehead usually occurs together with the aging of the upper eyelid and eyebrows. Some patients might need to also have a forehead lift together with eyelid surgery to achieve the best results.

Choosing a surgical technique depends on the patient’s status. The following factors influence that decision:

  • Gender and age of the patient
  • Form and condition of the eyebrow
  • Amount of eyelid sagging
  • Amount and condition of forehead sagging
  • The patient’s hair, its condition, and the degree of baldness
  • The patient’s expectations from the surgery

How long does it take for the results of forehead lift surgery to become visible?

You’ll need to wait for the swelling to go down before you can enjoy the results. The final results won’t even be noticeable in at least a few months. During the first few weeks after surgery, you might feel that your eyebrows are a bit higher than they should be.

This is completely normal and your brows will return to their proper position in a few weeks. The results of this surgery are not permanent and the aging process will leave its mark on your skin eventually. Excess exposure to the sun also helps increase the signs of aging on the face.

Post forehead lift care steps

After the surgery, you will have to stay bandaged for a few days and not touch it. A week after the surgery, you’ll be asked to drop by the clinic for your first examination. During this session, your sutures are removed and the incisions are examined very carefully.

You’ll have to rest at home for a week after the surgery. After the surgery you can return to your routine household activities.

Keep your head elevated above your body’s level using an extra pillow while sleeping.

Swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal for a week after forehead lift. This complication goes away gradually. In order to help the swelling go down, use an ice pack.

Avoid putting pressure or touching the incisions. During the convalescence period, you will experience a bit of itching which goes away in time.

You can return to work within a week. A patient’s recovery is much faster in some forehead lift methods so it’s best to consult with your surgeon on this matter.

You should avoid going into direct sunlight and exposure to head for a few weeks.

Complications of a forehead lift:

  • Temporary numbness
  • Discomfort
  • Irritation and swelling
  • Rare cases of infection and bleeding

At Estetikcentrum, we strive to uphold the highest treatment standards to prevent any of the above complications. The risk of becoming affected by a complication after surgery is very low at our clinic.

Another complication that arises from having this surgery performed incorrectly is that the eyes open up much wider than they should which is commonly referred to as the surprised look.

This is because the brows have been lifted too much or the surgery has been performed on folks who didn’t really need it. As Estetikcentrum clinic, we will make sure whether you are compatible with the surgery during the consultation session and also recommend the technique which best suits the desired results.

The possible asymmetry between the brows is another issue that could be seen after the surgery. Luckily, this asymmetry usually goes away during convalescence. Otherwise, you’ll most likely need additional surgery to resolve this issue. Experienced surgeons prevent such issues from even occurring so rest assured you’re in capable hands.

Hair loss is another issue that is usually seen after the surgery. Hair loss occurs in the place of incision at the hairline. This issue gets resolved on its own once your hair grows back again.

Will the scarring be noticeable?

We at Estetikcentrum care about your aesthetic values. In all surgeries, we give it our all so no harm befalls the patient. We maintain that stance in this surgery as well, so we make incisions on the back of the hairline to hide it there.

The wounds are hidden from sight depending on the density and thickness of your hair and after a while the incision line will completely vanish. The laparoscopy technique is used for patients who don’t have much hair. The length of incisions in this technique is much less.

The forehead lift is one of the most common plastic surgeries. We are very experienced in the field and would gladly host a consultation session with you.

During the session, the patient and surgeon will work together to examine the extent to which the surgery is compatible with the patient’s situation and also become informed on the necessary tips before undergoing surgery.
