Lip augmentation is one of the most common and sought after plastic surgeries and suitable to be performed once your skin loses its elasticity. Aging causes one’s lips to lose their aesthetic view and reduces the skin’s elasticity which can make a person appear to be sad or angry. Thin lips are congenital in some people. Those affected can make use of lip augmentation to return their lip to its previous natural volume and enhance its form. Final goal aside, lip augmentation can be done in two ways, one being filler injection and the other surgery.

Who is a suitable candidate for lip augmentation?

Way back in the past, you had to accept the fact that you were born with a certain body shape or face structure or at least try to change it a little through exercise and natural approaches to give it a better form. Still, sports and exercises are ineffective on some body parts. For example, exercising will never be able to impact your nose’s hump or enhance your thin lips. Nowadays, you can correct the shape and form of almost any part of your body using plastic surgery. However, this shouldn’t evolve into an obsession which eventually might lead to body dysmorphia. Each and every surgery must only be performed on those who are suitable candidates. Having thick and pouty lips are desirable for most women, but it should be noted that this surgery is suitable for the following people:

  • Those who have very thin lips compared to the rest of their face
  • Those who’ve lost their lips’ volume and form due to aging
  • Emergence of wrinkles and lines on the lip

Preparing for a lip augmentation:

Make sure to adhere to the following tips a few weeks before and on the day of the surgery:

If you’re a smoker, then definitely quit smoking two weeks prior to the surgery. Smoking reduces blood flow to the tissue and delays your recovery after surgery. To have long-lasting results, we recommend you quit smoking all together. You need to pucker your lips to hold a cigarette between them. This increases the wrinkles and lines around the lib which is very unpleasant for women.

You should stop the medication use such as Aspirin, non-steroidal drugs, and herbal supplements which act as blood thinners.

Wear a comfortable buttoned up shirt on the day of the surgery so you don’t have to take it off through your head.

To undergo injection or surgery? That is the question!

Lip reshaping technique is a fairly simple feat that can be done as an outpatient procedure. Choosing which lip augmentation technique should be done is based on the condition of the patient’s lips and expectations.

During the consultation session, you’ll meet one of our surgeons. Later your expectations are analyzed. If it’s decided that you’re a suitable candidate, then you and your surgeon will decide on the technique which best suits you. This is solely dependent on you and your expectations, so it’s not a one size fits all solution. Together, we’ll choose the best technique for you.

Lip augmentation with filler or gel:

Injecting filler into the lips is considered as a non-surgical technique. In this technique, the surgeon has full control over the results of the surgery and the period of convalescence is very short. The substance we use in our lip injection procedure is highly reliable. We use hyaluronic acid at our clinic for this purpose. This substance is available in different densities. Unfortunately, hyaluronic acid is absorbable; therefore, the treatment results are reversible. But with recent technological advancements, the molecular structure of this substance has been enlarged which results in longer durability. There are also other fillers available but the risk of asymmetry and visible unevenness of the lips is quite higher. This is because some gels start to move which causes abscess. The above-mentioned side-effects are less common in hyaluronic acid. If the injection is done correctly, your lips will become full and plump in the best possible way and look natural while talking and smiling.

Keep in mind that plastic surgeries are done to achieve a more beautiful shape and form. Enlarging the lips more than enough will make your lips look unnatural. Lip injection must be done with the shape of the face and other facial parts in mind. Injecting too much gel into the lips must be avoided. If the injected gel is more that it should be, then the chance of unevenness in the lips is much higher. If you’ve got thin lips, then less gel must be injected into your lip compared to other patients.

This surgery can be done at the request of the patient with general anesthesia, numbing cream, or local anesthesia (similar to the anesthetic used in dentistry). The fillers also contain numbing material in them. In lip augmentation with filler, the substance is injected under the skin with a thin needle. Even though this simple procedure is quite painless, you have to be prepared for a bit of pain and irritation during the surgery.

Patients commonly asked about the longevity and effectiveness of the filler injection technique. This is quite relative and differs from one person to another. The luscious pout from this procedure lasts for a few months. Afterwards, you may choose to repeat the procedure for renewed results. In fact, this is considered to be the benefit of this technique since if the patient is unsatisfied with the enhancement and size of their lips or are just bored with it, they can go back to their lips’ original form. After lip augmentation through injection, it is possible for your lips to become red and swollen but it’s normal. You can reduce the swelling by placing an ice pack on it for a few minutes. Signs of swelling go down after 2 to 5 days.

Lip augmentation with fat transfer:

Another common practice is enlarging lips by removing fat from other body parts with more fat. In this method, for example, the fat from the stomach, back, thigh, or sides is used. The extracted fat is later injected into the face or lips. Since the fat is extracted from the patient’s own body, the chances of infection from the injection are reduced significantly. The downside to this method is that it leads to more swelling after the injection and it is more difficult to shape the lips.

This is the most effective and efficient method. Although some of the injected fat is absorbed after a while, about 30 percent of the absorbed fat remains in the lip and is rarely absorbed in an asymmetrical fashion. This method’s effectiveness is permanent and does not require you to undergo revision. This procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and takes about an hour. This aesthetic procedure can be done in isolation or in combination with another surgery such as a face lift.

V-Y lip augmentation:

If you wish to have fuller and longer lasting results, then the most effective lip augmentation technique is V to Y. Multiple incisions are made on the lips in a V-shaped form and then are sutured in the shape of Y. Therefore, small incisions are made on the lips and are later closed in a way so that they’re turned outside. In this technique, the mucosa is lifted a bit to give the lips more volume. Lip augmentation can be combined with fat injection to make them plumper. Similar to the above-mentioned technique, fat is extracted from a body part and purified to later inject into the lips.

The wrinkles and saggy skin around the lips can be remedied using V-Y lip augmentation. Your plastic surgeon makes an incision on your lip at an angle that is both above and inside the lip. If the upper lip is long, then the surgeon makes the incision directly below the nose. (Upper lip surgery)

This technique is suitable for patients who have thin lips and wrinkles around them.

Still, the patient will feel that their lips are coarse for a few months afterwards. In both techniques, lip swelling will continue for about a month. Similar to the fat injection technique, this one also requires the patients to wait for six months to a year until the final results finally unveil themselves.

Lip augmentation post-care tips:

Use an ice pack to help reduce the pain and swelling.

Use a soft and comfortable pillow when sleeping.

If a certain ointment or cream has been prescribed for you, then use it as per the instruction.

In case your doctor has prescribed antibiotics for you, make sure to complete the full prescription according to the dosage.

You’ll have to change your diet to soft foods for 10 days after the surgery which don’t require chewing, such as pudding, yogurt, milk, and soup.

Depending on the surgical technique, the timeline for when you can return to work and your daily activities varies. In such cases, it’s best to refer to your doctor for more information. The V-Y lip augmentation is best for patients who can dedicate more time to resting since they’ll have to rest for at least three days. Avoid bending down and lifting heavy objects. You should avoid participating in sports and exercising for a few days after filler or fat injection.

Complications of a lip augmentation:

You will experience some degree of pain, irritation, and swelling which is normal and usually goes away after one or two days.

  • Nerve damage
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Lip asymmetry
  • Unsatisfied with the achieved form

The above mentioned are rare complications and side-effects of lip augmentations which we, at Estetikcentrum, are able to prevent using our specialists’ experience and skill.

How long do the results of lip augmentation last?

The longevity of this procedure depends on which technique was performed on you.

The results of filler injection also depend on the type of substance used. At Estetikcentrum, we use top tier fillers with the highest durability. Still, this technique’s results only last for 3 to 6 months and the patient is able to redo the procedure if they wish to do so.

Fat injection is has more longevity than filler injection, but it’s possible that you might need several injections to achieve the desired form and permanent results.

V-Y lip augmentation also has long-lasting results and there is no need to redo the procedure at a later time.

Frequently asked questions:

I was to drastically change how my lips look, is that possible?

To answer this question, we’d first have to examine your up close. Still, we caution patients to have logical and realistic expectations from the procedure. Excess gel injection causes the lips to appear uneven and lose their form after a while. We strive to reshape your face in the most aesthetically pleasing way.

Is lip augmentation a painful procedure?

This surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia. You won’t feel any pain during the surgery. After the anesthetic wears off, you’ll experience a degree of pain and discomfort which can be easily managed using pain medication. The pain usually subsides after 4 or 5 days. To prevent incurring further pain onto yourself, we suggest that you avoid foods which require you to chew.

How long does the surgery take?

The length of the surgery depends on multiple factors including size of the lips, technique, and the degree of complexity. The surgery usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour.

How long does it take for swelling and bruising to go down?

To make the bruising appear less visible, you’re going to require the aid of cosmetics. It takes a full months for the swelling to go down in the surgical procedure for lip augmentation.

Returning home on the same day:

A small surgery can be done with local anesthesia. Even if the surgery is done using general anesthesia, a few hours of rest at our clinic will be enough and you’ll be ready to return home that same day. In such cases, it’s usually best to have someone accompany you.

It is important to keep your expectations realistic, however, most patients experience significant change in how they look afterwards. You can also combine lip augmentation with other procedures, such as facelift, eyelid surgery, and liposuction (removing fat). We explore all possible options to help your reach your desired form.
