Skin alterations occur in various forms. There are two types of skin lesions in medical terms: benign lesions (with no sign of skin cancer), and malignant (skin cancer or the possibility of growing to a skin cancer). Benign lesions are certainly the most common. However, even if they are not dangerous, they can cause significant defects to your beauty.  Many of these skin alterations can be treated at Estetikcentrum clinic.

Which parts exhibit the most skin alterations?

Skin lesions mostly occur on the back of the neck, back of the body, lower thigh, legs and hands. Yet, we’d best not forget that these are only some parts subjected to skin lesions, other parts need periodic examinations as well. You need to know about the quality of your skin and monitor all the changes occurring to it. You should also check those barely visible parts of your body, such as between the fingers, groin, back of the knees, back, armpit, etc. These examinations are necessary, especially when there is a background of skin cancer in your family. If you have such a background, you’d better take some picture from your skin and moles and monitor their changes.

In what conditions should you examine the skin alterations?

Due to aging process, it is actually natural if your skin appearance starts to change. However, you should not neglect any of your skin alterations.  Skin cancer is easy to treat in its early stages. While it is fatal in its advanced stages.

For skin examinations:

First take a bath in order to clean all the impurity off your skin.

Examine your skin in a place with enough light.

Stand in front of a mirror and start the examination from the top of your scalp. Brush your hair away and check if there is any macule, mole, or temporary hair loss.

Then check the other parts of your body including your face, hands, feet, and body.

Always closely examine the darker parts of your body that are more exposed to the sun. These parts have more vulnerable skins and need periodic examinations.

Major skin alterations that can be treated in Estetikcentrum Clinic:

Atheroma:

Atheroma is a benign skin lesion. This condition occurs when subcutaneous glands are clogged by fat.  This can happen in any part of the body, but mostly in areas with a lot of hair. Atheroma appears mostly on the scalp. This cyst must be treated, otherwise it will grow bigger.

Lipoma (fatty lump):

Lipoma is a benign skin condition made of a normal fat tissue.  It is a fatty lump encapsulated and therefore limited to the under skin fat. Lipoma is not firm, but can be relatively hard.  Fatty lumps are mostly expected to appear in the soft tissues of the body. This condition is common among 40-60 year old people; however, it can also occur to younger people. Most of the times, lipoma is not dangerous to one’s health, yet it is unpleasant.

Risk factors for contracting fatty lumps:

  • Cysts on the head, face, neck, and the skin surrounding the ear are common for those who have oily skin and had acne before.
  • Men are twice as likely to be infected with this condition compared to women.
  • Having a family history of lipoma increases its infection risk.

Signs and symptoms of fatty lumps:

  • Lipoma may appear both in single or multiple on the skin.
  • They are generally soft to the touch and swollen.
  • Normally, they are not very large and only a few centimeters thick
  • If they put pressure on a nerve root they may hurt, otherwise, they are painless.

Treating skin alterations: fatty lump

Normally, fatty lumps don’t need any treatment.  However, if they move, change size or cause any pain, you can get rid of them with a simple outpatient procedure.  In this case, the doctor will perform a biopsy before surgery to diagnose the lump’s status. Fatty lumps can easily be removed through liposuction or laser, however, in this method; it is possible that they reappear after some time.

Seborrheic keratosis (senile wart):

This is probably one of the most common skin conditions that usually occur during your mid-life and elder years, and mostly appear on face, body and arms. Senile wart is similar to a medal stuck to the skin, and its color can be black or gray.

Most people mistake senile wart for melanoma (or moles capable of becoming skin cancer). But they are not cancerous. Seborrheic keratosis are safe skin growths that appear with aging. In some people only a single growth may appear on their skin, while in some others seborrheic keratosis can grow and increase in number. This condition is not contagious and cannot be transmitted through physical contact.

Symptoms:

They are usually brown, small and do not show any specific sign. At some point, they become inflamed and cause pain and itching.

Risk factors of contracting seborrheic keratosis:

  • Sun exposure
  • Skin stimulation
  • Eczema
  • Sunburn
  • Infection with HPV
  • Genetic mutation
  • A family history of seborrheic keratosis

Treating skin alterations: seborrheic keratosis

This condition usually does not have any symptom or complication. Therefore, there is no need for any treatment. However, some people do not appreciate the reduced aesthetic effect it has. If you feel the same, we can remove the seborrheic keratosis out with a simple outpatient procedure and return beauty to your skin.  Cryotherapy (or cold therapy) is another method for treating seborrheic keratosis in which liquid nitrogen is applied on the infected area by a spray or wool. After that, the growth will be gone from your skin in a few days.

Malignant melanoma:

This condition is a malignant skin alteration and a type of skin cancer that can afflict anyone. And it can advance to metastasis stage if it is not diagnosed in time. But if it is diagnosed in time, the survival rate will be almost 100% certain. One of the most visible symptoms of malignant melanoma is the moles that change their color, shape, and size. These moles may gradually spread to other parts of the body and eventually cause death.

Melanoma symptoms:

  • When two halves of the mole are asymmetrical
  • Lobule and irregular borders of the mole
  • Different colors across different parts of the body, ranging from white to brown and black
  • Its diameter is usually more than half a millimeter
  • Permanent shape changing of the mole
  • Different look compared to other moles on the skin
  • Itching, bleeding, and pain in the mole area

Risk factors for contracting melanoma:

Every person is in the exposure of infection with this type of skin alteration. People with light skin are more likely in the danger of melanoma; however, it does not mean that people with darker skin are not in danger.

Sun exposure, rays, or bronzing the skin may result in infection with melanoma.

Having a family history of melanoma is another risk factor.

Treating skin alterations: melanoma

Recommending the proper treatment method for this condition will depend on several factors such as 1) how much it has developed under the skin 2) how much it has spread to other areas of the body and 3) the patient’s physical health. One of these treatment methods is a surgical procedure in which the doctor takes out the whole cancerous tissue. If the cancer has not advanced to its further stages, the clinic can provide the patients with this procedure using local anesthesia.  Other treatment methods are chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and other common methods.

Freckles:

Freckles are clusters of concentrated brown or dark marks that appear on the face, chest, arms and back of the hands. This condition mostly occurs to people who have very light skin and blond hair.  Freckles may appear at any age, but they usually happen to children. The number of freckles usually increases in summer and they disappear in winter.

Why do we get freckles?

Freckles appear as a result of a pigment in our skin known as melanin. Once exposed to the sun, a person’s skin cells produce extra melanin to protect the inner layers of the skin. Imbalanced production of melanin results in freckles. These dark marks increase during pregnancy or when using birth control pills.

Treating freckles:

Several ways are available to treat freckles and other similar skin alterations like acne, ranging from fading cream prescriptions to laser treatment. If creams do not help in treating freckles, then laser treatment is recommended. It is a cheap method with a high success rate.  Laser treatment is painless and does not need any type of anesthesia. This method has an easy post-operation care and a short period of convalescence.

Laser treatment can be useful for different types of skin conditions including face spots, acne, and pimples.  Therefore, laser treatment is considered to be one of the best and safest methods to remove freckles at the moment.

Treating skin alterations with laser:

Laser can treat some of the benign skin alterations.  You will be examined during the skin consultation meeting with your doctor. The doctor will determine whether it is possible to use laser treatment to remove the growths.  Senile warts and freckles are the two conditions which can usually and effectively be treated by laser.  The most important benefit of laser treatment is that it does not need any surgical intervention. The patient will not experience any bleeding after the procedure and the recovery period will be very short in this method. Our dermatologists are here to help determine an appropriate treatment method for you.

Outpatient procedures:

Benign superficial skin lesions can be removed through surgery under local anesthesia. Painkillers will be prescribed if necessary. You might need to stop eating and drinking 12 hours before the procedure. Wash your skin clean before the procedure. In some cases, infection control medicine will be prescribed for you. You can return to your regular daily life and work immediately after the procedure and there is no need to be admitted at the clinic.
