The whiteness of our teeth has a great impact on first impressions. By whitening your teeth, you can have that Hollywood movie star smile. At Estetikcentrum, this is done under the supervision of experienced dentists to assure the best possible and long-lasting result in the safest possible condition. We only use high quality and known products which don’t damage your teeth. Teeth whitening is a common practice and most patients can use it. The patient has a right to be informed of all the aspects involved and receive answers for any important questions they have in mind. Awareness of the treatment procedure and post-treatment care instructions help the patient maintain the achieved results.
Why do our teeth change color?
Our tooth consists of two parts, the enamel and dentin. Tooth enamel is a thin and bright layer which covers the dentin and protects the tooth. The enamel’s thickness determines how bright and white one’s tooth will be. Enamel varies in thickness which results in those with thicker enamel to have whiter teeth. Due to erosion and passage of time, the tooth’s light reflection properties will be lower and the dentin’s color becomes more visible. Coincidently, colorful food can also enter spaces within the enamel which results in tooth discoloration. Some of the common causes of external tooth discoloration include:
- Consuming drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine, and so on.
- Tooth enamel erosion
- Lack of oral and dental hygiene
- Orthodontic treatment (yellow discoloration around the braces)
Benefits of getting your teeth whitened at a dental clinic:
There are many ways for teeth whitening, most of which can be done with home remedies. Teeth whitening pens, strips, and trays are all options which are readily available at pharmacies as over-the-counter solutions. However, this ease of access comes at a price. The possible complications involved with teeth whitening treatments increased through these methods which include gum inflammation and tooth sensitivity. The chances of your gums coming in contact with bleaching material are extremely high in the above-mentioned methods. In addition to that, misuse of the product could result in damages dealt to your teeth.
In products such as teeth whitening strips, all teeth cannot be whitened similarly. This is because white strips do not fully cover the gap between the teeth and the teeth’s fissures. Lack of contact with bleaching material could result in inconsistency in the teeth’s color. As a result, your teeth are whiter on flat surfaces but the fissures between the teeth remain yellow. Ironically, this’ll make the teeth look even worse than before.
In dental clinics:
- Special protection shield is applied to safeguard the soft tissue of teeth against bleaching material.
- Your teeth will be consistent in terms of color.
- Dental enamel is protected.
- Your teeth will be whiter than the results of home remedies.
- The results are noticeable much faster and long-lasting.
Teeth whitening at a dental clinic is only the beginning. This treatment is continued with home bleaching to have longer lasting results. You consult your dentist on teeth whitening home remedies. Since some home remedies are no suitable for all folks.
Before teeth whitening:
Your teeth will become a bit sensitive after whitening. Therefore, it is necessary to fix tooth decay and treat gum diseases beforehand to prevent any further issues from exacerbating. Before the treatment begins, your teeth and gums are examined completely to ensure their health. Any sort of decay or crack on the teeth is treated and in case the patient has some sort of gum disease, the necessary steps will be taken to resolve that as well.
If there is a significant amount of plaque on your teeth then you will need professional teeth cleaning before teeth whitening. In case root planning and scaling are needed, these will also be done before your treatment begins.
Dental care services of Estetikcentrum
How is our teeth whitening process done?
We use plasma lights in our teeth whitening treatments which is the most popular way of doing professional dental whitening. It’s time effective, risk-free and yield amazing results. The brightness of your teeth is solely dependent on your condition.
At Estetikcentrum, we use a gentle whitening gel which is approved by Sweden’s standards institute. The gel is activated using plasma light. This material stays on your teeth for a few minutes until the stains are removed. All these steps maybe repeated multiple times until your teeth reach the desired level of brightness. Finally, the dentist removes the whitening material using special instruments, then washes the mouth carefully and removes the gum’s protection shield. This process takes around 60 minutes.
The results of the treatment will be immediately noticeable. This method is effective in removing tartar and stains which are hard to remove using a toothbrush and helps your teeth to be consistently white. To do this, high density hydrogen peroxide gel is used which helps teeth whitening. Plasma lights also stimulate the teeth whitening process and result in significantly brighter teeth.
Diet to follow after teeth whitening:
Teeth whitening is an optional treatment which has pleasant results. However, maintaining those results depend on how well you look after your teeth. One of the most important factors in maintaining the results of whitening is to follow the post-treatment nutrition and dietary tips. Later on we will cover the dietary “Dos and Don’ts” after teeth whitening.
When you leave the dentist’s chair, the effect of the bleaching material persists on your teeth. Therefore, it is recommended that you follow a “white diet” for 14 days after teeth whitening treatment. Even though our dentist will provide you with all of the needed information, you can return to this post at a later time to refresh your knowledge on the allowed and banned food.
What is a white diet?
As the name suggests, you need to consume white foods and avoid colorful food for some time after teeth whitening. Chicken, fish, egg, rice, and other similar food are considered to be part of the white diet. In order to prevent tooth discoloration, it is best that you not consume colored food for two weeks after treatment and until the teeth whitening material are still active.
Worry not though, you won’t have to follow an extremely difficult diet. While on the white diet, you can eat almost anything colorless, from white chocolate to white wine.
Permitted foods after teeth whitening:
- Dairy products (without color or added fruits such as berries or beets)
- Pasta but without the sauce
- White meat
- White bread
Banned foods after teeth whitening:
After the treatment, it is strongly recommended that you avoid the following food. These food and drinks can easily change the color of your bright new teeth.
- Acidic drinks such as all sodas
- Chewing gum
- Energy drinks
- Red wine
- Dark fruits such as all kinds of berries
- Citrus fruits
- Different sauces such as soy sauce and ketchup
- Spices such as paprika, curry and turmeric
- Fatty food
Smoking is explicitly prohibited but we strongly urge against it since it can change the color of your teeth significantly. Even though it might be a hassle to keep track of the food you consume, we promise it’ll be worth that desired bright movie star smile you’ve invested for.
If you can’t possibly stop drinking soda or juices, at least use a straw. Place the straw at the end of your mouth and swallow the drink quickly so it doesn’t spill in your mouth and get in contact with your teeth. In order to reduce the effect of coffee and tea on your teeth, make sure to wash your teeth with water afterwards.
You experience gum inflammation for a few days after teeth whitening. To alleviate pain and sensitivity, avoid consuming crunchy and dry food. Therefore, you need to set aside snacks like biscuits, cookies, and chips for a while.
Complications of teeth whitening:
The complications involved with teeth whitening are temporary and will resolve themselves in a matter of days. Some of the complications associated with this method include:
In case the gums and soft tissue come into contact with the whitening gel, the gum will be temporarily red and inflame. To avoid this issue, your gums will be covered using a special gel to prevent it from getting into contact with teeth whitening material. The chances of gum inflammation occurring in specialized clinics is quite low due to the dentist’s preventative measures and monitoring. Gum inflammation usually goes away in 5 days.
The most common issue with the teeth whitening treatment is the feeling of pain and sensitivity in the teeth when consuming cold or hot food. If you have sensitive teeth, make sure to notify your dentist so they can take proper measures in response to your condition. Your teeth will become even more sensitive after calculus removal and root planning.
Use of mouthwash containing fluoride and toothpaste made for sensitive teeth help reduce gum inflammation and tooth sensitivity. In additional to that, after your teeth whitening, make sure to follow the nutrition and diet tips mentioned to resolve your tooth sensitivity sooner.

Keep in mind that the final result depends on the amount of stains on your teeth, their color, and genetics. Therefore, each patient’s final results can vary to some extent. In any case, after this treatment, your teeth will look brighter than the day before.

How long do the results of teeth whitening last?
Your teeth’s color depends on your life style and the type of food you eat. Adherence to oral and dental hygiene helps maintain the results. After treatment, you will be given a list of foods you allowed and not allowed to eat. But at the end of the day, you’re the sole person responsible for following your dentist’s advice which helps you maintain the results. In our clinic’s experience, the results of the treatment generally last for a year or two. So if you want to keep that beautiful bright smile, you ought to listen to your dentist’s dietary advice and adhere to an oral hygiene routine.
I’ve had some dental restoration (crowns) done before, do those whiten as well?
Unfortunately, teeth whitening does not change the original color of dental restorations, such as bridges, crowns, and dentures. Still, if you don’t follow the suggested diet or hygiene tips, their color will also change. This process makes the dental restorations to return to their original color and not get any whiter. If your natural teeth’s color is similar to the bridge and crown’s color, then there won’t be any stark differences between the colors. This why it is often suggested that if you want to have crown or bridge restoration, you should go through teeth whitening first because it removes all tea and coffee stains and returns your teeth to their original color. If done so, the restored teeth’s color will be identical to your natural teeth and you won’t have color disparity issues in the future. Color disparity in the front teeth is extremely annoying.
I have an important event to attend and would like to have more appealing teeth by then. When should I drop by for a teeth whitening session?
If you have whitened your teeth before in the past year, you should drop by one week before the event for a revision teeth whitening. This treatment method has no specific complications other than a little bit of pain and sensitivity which are normal in most patients. This treatment method is completely optional and solely dependent on the patient’s choice. Still, it would be best that you avoid this treatment during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and when you’re blow the age of 18. Those below 18 still haven’t devolved their dentin and tooth enamel and because of the free space, the teeth will be more sensitive.
Does teeth whitening damage the tooth enamel?
Use and misuse of home kits could lead to tooth sensitivity, receding gums and issues for tooth enamel. Lack of attention paid to the instruction on the packing, frequent use of the treatment and incorrect use of the product could damage teeth.
