A new method of treating obesity has been launched as a non-surgical alternative to gastric surgery. The Allurion program, which involves the patient swallowing a small capsule that becomes a water balloon in the stomach, has few complications compared to surgery.
- Our position is that you should try a method with fewer risks before having a life-changing operation," says Dr. Ali Bagher at Estetikcentrum.
Results show that 95% of patients maintain their weight one year after treatment with the Allurion balloon.
Surgical procedures can be risky
Treating overweight and obesity with surgery, such as gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery, is now relatively common. However, these operations involve lifelong changes to the way the body processes food, as well as significant risks, as part or all of the stomach is removed. Chief Medical Officer Ali Bagher says that:
- In addition to the risks of the surgery itself, there is also a risk of leakage, bleeding and strangulation, i.e. a lack of blood supply to the intestines. These complications can be life-threatening, and many people are affected.
A new alternative to surgery
As an alternative to surgery, there is now a new method to facilitate weight loss - the Allurion balloon. Instead of removing large parts of the digestive system, the patient simply swallows a capsule that is filled with liquid in the stomach. It then becomes a balloon that takes up space and creates a constant feeling of fullness. The method is therefore completely non-invasive, and the balloon is designed to burst and come out naturally after four months.
Since you don't get hungry, you automatically eat less and get fuller faster.
- "For people who are struggling to lose their excess weight, this could be the key to kick-starting weight loss," says Ali Bagher.
The Allurion program is currently carried out in 60 countries around the world. and the treatment is combined with dietary advice and coaching to create new habits and break the patterns that caused the obesity, to ensure that all patients maintain their weight even after the balloon.
- A large study involving 1770 participants who received the Allurion treatment has been published in the scientific journal Obesity. It showed that over 99.3% of patients had no serious complications," says Ali Bagher.

Designed to come out naturally
There are other types of stomach balloons on the market, but a clear advantage of the Allurion balloon is that it can be swallowed as a capsule instead of being placed by endoscopy, and that it is designed to burst and come out naturally after four months.
By then, the patient has been able to get their body used to eating smaller portions, and has made some progress both in their weight loss journey and mentally thanks to the coaching provided.
- The aim is not to make a permanent intervention on the body, but rather to give the patient a first boost while encouraging them to change their habits to create a healthier life," says Ali Bagher, who has treated more than 100 patients with the Allurion balloon.
Deposit in just 15 minutes
Estetikcentrum in Malmö is one of the few clinics in the Nordic region offering the new treatment method.
- " Estetikcentrum was selected by the company Allurion because of the high level of safety and quality of the clinic," says Ali Bagher.
According to him, the main advantage of the Allurion balloon is that it does not need to be inserted or removed by gastroscopy. Instead, the patient swallows a capsule containing a folded balloon. Through a thin catheter, the balloon is then filled with saline solution. 'The placement only takes 15-20 minutes,' says Ali Bagher.
- It is a very quick and simple procedure that does not involve any major risks for the patient," he says.
More than 100 000 people have so far been treated with the Allurion balloon, developed by researchers at Harvard University. Results show that as many as 95% of patients maintain their weight one year after treatment.
It is a very quick and simple procedure that does not involve any major risks for the patient.

Personal coaching and dietary advice
At Estetikcentrum , the Allurion balloon is just one part of a program that includes professional dietary advice, coaching and support for six months," explains Ali Bagher.
- We recommend that anyone who wants to lose weight should first try to change their diet and increase their exercise. If they can't do it on their own, we can help them with the Allurion program. It's important to emphasize that it's not a 'quick fix', but a lifestyle change to achieve the best possible results," he says.
As part of the treatment, patients receive a personal coach and dietary advice, and meet with their team regularly for six months.
- It also includes a digital watch and a digital scale that connects with a mobile app to regularly measure the patient's weight and get the right support from our experts.

Developed to lose 10-15% of body weight
The Allurion program is a six-month treatment aimed at people who want to lose 10-15% of their body weight. People with a BMI above 27 can benefit from the treatment, but they cannot be treated if they have previously had a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery.
- The treatment is mainly aimed at people who are significantly overweight and have tried but failed to lose weight, says Ali Bagher.
On Estetikcentrum several patients have lost over 20 kg in just a few months.
- " One female patient lost 34 kg in six months using the program," says Ali Bagher.
Tools for long-term weight loss
Dietician Samantha Lerviken explains that it takes three to five days for the body to get used to the balloon. "The program is individualized according to the patient's conditions and life situation," she explains.
- We give patients tools that they can use now and in the future. This can be anything from what you put on your plate, how quickly you eat, to how you can incorporate more exercise into your daily life. The basic idea is that it should be sustainable and work for you.
