The Allurion balloon is taking the world by storm as a new, non-surgical alternative to gastric bypass surgery. Now patients can lose weight quickly without feeling hungry, thanks to the gastric balloon, which is swallowed like a capsule and creates a feeling of fullness for four months before it bursts and is naturally expelled.
But how do you make a deposit? Here, we explain how the process works.
Take as a capsule
The Allurion balloon is a soft gastric balloon that is folded inside a capsule, which the patient swallows on the day of insertion. The capsule is slightly larger than a painkiller tablet and is connected to a catheter used to fill the balloon with a saline solution once it is in place in the stomach.
An X-ray ensures that the capsule is in the right place
Once the patient has swallowed the capsule, an X-ray is used to ensure that the capsule is properly positioned in the stomach. This is a non-invasive and painless method to ensure that the procedure is performed safely.
“I found it a little uncomfortable to have a tube in my throat, but once it was in place, I didn’t feel a thing,” says our former patient Wilma.
The Allurion balloon is filled with saline solution
Once the balloon is in place in the stomach, it is filled with 550 ml of saline solution, which is completely harmless and designed to match the body’s own environment when the balloon eventually bursts. The filling process takes a few minutes and feels only slightly cold, as if you were “drinking unconsciously,” as our former patient Pal explains in the video below.
The saline solution contains water, salt, and minerals, and is designed to be expelled naturally when the balloon bursts after about four months.
A second X-ray is performed
Once the balloon is filled, another X-ray is taken to make sure everything looks good. The balloon should be positioned in the stomach, where it takes up space and helps you feel full. The balloon will remain in place for four months, helping you feel full so you can focus on developing new, healthy habits that will last.
After the deposit
After the implant, you’ll speak with your Allurion coach, who will introduce you to your smartwatch and digital scale—tools you’ll use to track your progress throughout your treatment. These tools are included in the program and are a great help to both you and your coach in providing you with personalized support along the way.
