Unlike many other surgical procedures, liposuction is minimally invasive. This means that most people have a very quick recovery and can go home the same day as the procedure. Because the procedure is considered so smooth, many people ask: does liposuction leave scars? The answer to that question is yes, but the scars are only about 1cm in size and barely visible over time.

With liposuction, you get a very popular and appreciated method that is designed to shape the body and get rid of annoying fat deposits. Liposuction is commonly performed on the upper arms, abdomen and waist, but also on the back, inner thighs and hips. Liposuction uses a small tubular instrument (a cannula) that sucks the fat out of the area to be treated through small channels. In order to create these channels, small incisions of about 1cm need to be made and this is also where the scars are created. 

In a normal liposuction, you may need to make 2-3 of these small scars that are barely visible after a while.

Minimal scars with liposuction

Although liposuction causes scars, the scars are very small. Over time, even the scars will fade, which in turn leads to them being perceived as almost completely invisible. In addition, the incisions are made in very strategic places to reduce visibility even further. For example, incisions may be made in the natural folds of the skin or will be hidden by swimwear/underwear. However, it is important to remember that scarring is always individual, just like the end result of liposuction. Factors that influence the appearance of scars include the healing process and aftercare.

What do the scars look like?
