Tummy tuck surgery is a major and extensive procedure that requires both time and patience for the body to heal properly. Recovery is an important part of the process, and we make sure you receive the support you need to feel safe and well-informed. Here you can read more about the recovery process and what you can do to create the best conditions for optimal healing.

After surgery – what the first few days are like

After surgery, the first few days are often the toughest. Before you leave the clinic, you’ll have a consultation with your surgeon, who will explain how the surgery went and what you need to keep in mind in the coming days. You’ll also be given pain medication, a sick leave certificate, and a compression garment that you should wear around your abdomen for about 4–6 weeks. We understand that it may feel uncomfortable, but the compression garment helps the skin and tissue heal evenly and also reduces swelling.

Follow-up and support along the way

The very next day after you return home, our nurse will call you to check in on how you’re doing and to answer any questions you may have. We also follow up on day 3 and day 10 to ensure we’re with you every step of the way. Your first follow-up appointment is scheduled about 3 days after your surgery, and your final check-up takes place approximately 3 months later. At that time, we’ll also take after photos so you can clearly see the difference!

Important things to keep in mind during recovery

After a tummy tuck, it’s not unusual to feel sore, tired, and sometimes tight across your abdomen. The compression garment may feel tight, and it’s common to have difficulty standing up straight during the first few days. This is a completely natural part of the healing process, and these sensations usually subside as your body recovers. For optimal healing, it’s important to always follow your surgeon’s recommendations:

  • Get plenty of rest during the first few days
  • Avoid heavy lifting and sudden movements
  • Wear the girdle for 4–6 weeks
  • Cover the scars with tape for 2–3 months (preferably longer)
  • Avoid exposing the scars to the sun
  • Wait at least 6 weeks before resuming intense exercise
  • Do not smoke while recovering

Many people want to get back to their daily routines as soon as possible, and we understand that. However, you should expect to be off work for the next 2–3 weeks. If your job involves heavy lifting, you may need to rest for longer. During your consultation, you and the surgeon will discuss the nature of your work and then create a plan tailored specifically to you.

We're with you every step of the way

Everyone heals at their own pace, and our team is always available if you need advice or support during this time.
