Having enlarged breasts as a man is much more common than you think, but it's not always easy to talk about. Often, problems creep in where you feel like you don't want to take your shirt off, that your clothes don't fit the way you want them to, or that your chest feels disproportionate to the rest of your body. Many people don't know that it's called gynecomastia and that it can actually be treated!

At Estetikcentrum , we are used to meeting men who want answers to their questions about gynecomastia surgery. So we've gathered together some of the most common questions that may arise - and of course the answers to them.

What is gynecomastia and why does it occur?

Gynecomastia is when men develop enlarged breast tissue, often in their teens. For some, it regresses after puberty, but for many the tissue remains. Even in adulthood, breast tissue may continue to grow, causing the breasts to resemble a woman's. This can be due to hormonal changes, genetics, obesity or medication, but it can also occur for no apparent reason at all.

Is there any investigation to be done before surgery?

Yes, we recommend that you do a hormonal assessment through your health center before booking surgery. This is to rule out the possibility that there is a medical cause behind the problem, which should be treated before considering surgery. In the vast majority of cases, nothing abnormal is found, but it is still important to keep an eye on things.

Do you remove both fat and mammary gland?

It can be both, or one or the other. Sometimes it's because the mammary gland has grown and sometimes it's because fat has accumulated in the area. This is why the surgery is tailored to each person's body and circumstances. In some cases, liposuction is enough, but often we combine it with the removal of breast gland tissue to create a nice and even result.

How visible will the scars be afterwards?

Most people are pleasantly surprised by how discreet the scars actually are. The incisions are usually made at the edge of the perineum or in a natural crease under the breast, so that they are not visible in everyday life. After healing, they tend to be difficult to even notice, especially after they have faded.

How long is the recovery after surgery?

Most people take it easy for about a week after surgery, and at Estetikcentrum you will always get up to two weeks of sick leave. You can expect to be home from work for a few days and to avoid heavy exercise for two to three weeks. You will see the full results after a few months when the swelling has completely subsided!

Does the result last a lifetime?

This is one of our most frequently asked questions and we understand why! In principle, yes, the results will last a lifetime, but that's assuming you maintain a stable weight. It is very rare for the tissue to come back and therefore many see this as a long-term solution.

Let us help you to improve your self-confidence!

Gynecomastia surgery is not unusual and you don't have to feel uncomfortable or alone in your concerns. We've helped many men get back to a body they feel confident in, where their chest looks the way it should and their clothes fit the way they want. If you have more questions (or just want to talk to someone who knows what it's all about), you are more than welcome to book a consultation with us at Estetikcentrum in Malmö. We are just a phone call away!
