How painful is it to get lip fillers?

Share the post

Lip fillers are felt, but the pain varies greatly from person to person. Some describe the treatment as several quick pricks with a brief discomfort, while others experience a more pronounced burning and pressure when the product is injected. Lips are sensitive, so it is natural to feel anxious about your first treatment. The pain is rarely constant during the visit, but is mainly felt at the needle prick and when we work on different parts of the lip. How you experience it is affected by your pain threshold, how tense you are and how extensive the treatment is.

How the treatment usually feels

The first few stings can be the most painful because you don’t know what to expect yet. The sensation is often like a quick pinch, followed by a slight pressure or a brief sting, and some areas of the lips are more sensitive than others. A lip filler treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how much is being done.

A treatment that focuses on lip contouring may feel different than one that aims for more volume. The number of injections and where they are placed will depend on your circumstances and the desired outcome. More product does not automatically mean more pain, as technique, placement and time also play a role.

For treatments that can be painful, such as lips, we always offer pain relief cream. You can still feel touch and pressure even when the area is numbed. The goal is not always to remove all sensation, but to keep the discomfort at a manageable level.

Nervousness can affect the experience

If you are afraid of needles or have had an unpleasant experience with injections in the past, it is wise to mention this at the consultation. When the body is tense, even a small prick can be felt more noticeably, and it often helps to know exactly how the treatment is done.

All injections are required by law to have a consultation with an injection nurse and a minimum of 48 hours of reflection. The consultation can be done at our clinic or online and gives you time to talk about both the desired result and concerns about pain. Our injection nurse explains what you are likely to feel, what product is planned and how the shape of the lips will affect the treatment. Fillers should never be performed according to a template, so proportions, tissue and previous treatments are taken into account before we begin.

How do your lips feel afterwards?

As the anesthesia wears off, your lips may feel sore, tight, or swollen, and you may experience bruising around one or more of the injection sites. These reactions often make your lips feel larger and firmer than the results that will later become visible.

The soreness afterwards is different from the pain during the injection itself. It is noticeable when you talk, eat or touch your lips. Avoid pressing or touching the area, and avoid strong sunlight and strenuous exercise for the first few weeks. Always follow the advice you are given, as aftercare may depend on how the treatment was performed.

Severe pain or pain that is clearly increasing should not be ignored. Contact us immediately if the symptoms deviate from the information you have received or if you are unsure about a reaction, instead of comparing with pictures and other people's experiences online.

It should feel possible to say stop.

A safe treatment means that you can tell us what you are feeling while the injections are being given. Pain is personal, and there is no need to try to endure it to be a simple patient. If an area feels particularly sensitive, the injection nurse may stop and assess how the treatment should continue.

You can ask for a short break at any time, ask us to describe the next step before it is performed, and tell us immediately if the feeling changes. It is also completely reasonable to refrain if you still feel unsure after the consultation. Fillers are an aesthetic treatment that should be based on a well-considered decision, not on you feeling compelled to proceed.
