Lip augmentations are one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed when the skin around the mouth starts to lose its elasticity. With age the contour of the lips starts fading and the skin loses its elasticity, which can sometimes give the impression that one is angry or sad. But lip augmentation can also be used to correct the natural volume and shape of the lip. Regardless of the motive, lip augmentation can be performed through the use of fillers or surgical measures.
Filler or surgical procedure?
Lip augmentation is a relatively simple procedure and is usually done in conjunction with the consultation if you choose to enlarge the lips with fillers. This procedure requires no anesthesia. When you book an appointment with us for lip enhancement, you will meet with one of our surgeons. Together, you map out your expectations and desires to see how a lip enhancement can help you. If you have the certain conditions for the procedure, you and your surgeon will discuss which method suits you best. It depends largely on your expectations and requirements. Together we will find a solution that best suits you.
Lip augmentation with fillers
We do lip enhancement with fillers with the most reputable products. These fillers are highly appreciated by our patients because, among other things they contain hyaluronic acid, which is a sugar molecule found naturally in the body, and treatment provides immediate visible results.
The procedure can be initiated with anesthesia if the patient wishes , either with a slight numbing cream or local anesthetic (similar to regular dental anesthetic). The filler products also contain anesthetics. Lip enhancement with fillers entails that the surgeon injects filler using a thin needle that is inserted under the skin. Although surgery is considered relatively painless and easy, you can experience a little tension and tingling during the actual injection.
A common question we get about lip enhancement with fillers is how long the results last. This is specific and may vary from person to person, however the enlargement usually endures for fseveral months. You can then choose whether you want to repeat the procedure. After a lip augmentation with fillers, it is common that the lips swell up and blush. It is a natural consequence of the punctures in your lips. You can reduce the swelling by holding something cooling against the swelling for a few minutes. The symptoms will disappear after 2-5 days.
Lip augmentation with fat and traditional surgery
The other popular method is to enlarge lips by extracting fat from the part of the body where fat is abundant, that is, from the abdomen/waist or thighs/hips. The fat is then injected into the lips or face, in what is called a fat transplantation. The method is very efficient, and up to 30 percent of the volume of fat absorbed stays in the lips. The effect is permanent and avoids repeated treatments with fillers. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes about an hour.
If you want bigger lips then the most effective method is usually the V-Y plasty. At the inside of the lip a V-shaped incision is made which is later sewn together in a Y-shape. Thus the mucous membrane is pushed forward. A lip enhancement can also be advantageously combined with fat injections to make the lips fuller. Fat is retrieved from any part of your body, cleaned thoroughly and then injected into your lips.
Wrinkle treatments around the corners of the mouth and sagging corners of the mouth can also be addressed with simple surgical procedures. Here, your plastic surgeon makes an incision at an angle that is at the top of and in the mouth. If the upper lip is too long, the surgeon places an incision just above the nose (called upper lip surgery).
Going home the same day
A minor procedure can be done under local anesthesia. Even if an operation has been performed under general anesthesia it is usually sufficient to get a few hours of rest and treatment at our clinic, then it is generally alright to go home.
It is important to have realistic expectations of the treatment. Most patients experience a remarkable improvement. It is also possible to combine a lip enhancement, for example, with a face lift, eyelid surgery or liposuction. We’ll discuss with you exactly what choices you have.
